Sacred Painting in Seattle
2012-01-03
There are at least two things that make the painting technique that Harish Johari taught his students so special.  One is the technique itself, coming from a long line of living masters bringing light to the central subject like NO other water color technique in the world. You can come to a workshop to learn more about this technique.

The other source are the drawings of Harish Johari's.  He has drawn inspiration from centuries of Indian art.  Plucking the faces from one era, the expressive hands from another and the proportional figures from yet another era.

Harish Johari explains how he visited the ancient Sacred Caves of India as one of his sources of inspiration.  Ever since then, I have longed to visit these caves in India.  And I have just returned from seeing some of them for the first time in my life.
I am so excited to share with you some of the Indian carvings and paintings that inspired Harish Johari and Pieter Weltevrede.  I have been reading about the Ellora, Ajanta and Elephanta caves from Harish Johari's writings.

Learn more about how Harish Johari drew inspiration from the different eras of paintings and sculptures here:  http://www.sanatansociety.com/indian_art_galleries/harish_johari_painting_tradition/painting_tradition_harish_johari_styles.htm
I hope to return to this magical land and visit the Elephanta Caves, that are just a ferry ride in Mumbai.
Enjoy and I hope they inspire you as well. by Kathleen Whalen
