Supplies for Yantra workshop 2009
There are 3 categories of supplies for the workshop.
We use gouache and water color paints that are provided as part of the yantra workshop. Please remember! Only a very small dab of paint is needed. Some of the lines that you will be painting are a very small area, and the paint goes a long way.

1. The first group of supplies is what everyone needs to bring.

Compass (not the cheapest kind you can find, but maybe one notch up from that. We have at least two extra compasses in the class. Please let Kathleen know ahead if you will be needing to borrow)

HB and/or 2H pencil (You will be erasing most of the lines that you originally lay down, so a harder lead will allow for easy erasure. Keep a gentle touch on the paper)

Water cup (one or two glass jars for mixing your paints)

A box to lean on. This is for your painting board if you are sitting on the floor while painting. This could be a recycle/milk crate, a waste paper basket, a small card board box. In general, it is nice to have your drawing board land around heart level while you draw/paint on the floor. I often stop using the box after I have drawn the yantra, and begin painting. Experiment, see what feels right to you.

A painting board. This does not have to be fancy. Even a piece of cardboard can work. Some people use a masonite board or a foam board (available at Artist and Craftsman Supply, see below).

A small lamp to help give ample light in the afternoon. There is great ambient light in the space, and the vibration of the colors can be arrived at with proper light.

Blankets, cushions, yoga mats, that you really like. There is a supply of cushions and yoga mats at the studio as well. Bring things to keep you comfortable sitting on the floor, and keep you warm. There is at least one yoga ball for stretching in the space already.

Extra socks or a pair of slippers. We will be taking our shoes off upon entering the space. So you may want to bring a pair of really comfy, slightly grippy socks or slippers. There is a nice cork floor. Be comfortable!
Dress in comfortable, loose clothing on Saturday and Sunday. The less that gets in your way, the better. %

Please note: This art form is traditionally done while seated on the floor. That being said, if you have any physical limitations or need to sit at a table; No problem. There are some back jacks, and we can arrange to have a table for a few students. Please let Kathleen know ahead of time, so that we can plan the space to accommodate everyone easily.

2.The second group of supplies is for beginning painters. You can purchase most of these supplies at any local art store. We recommend the Artist and Craftsman store in the Udistrict or Utrecht on Capitol Hill. See the end for links to these stores. If you already have basic art supplies, water color brushes, mixing trays, then the only items that you might need that are:

A white eraser - regular square kind(50 cents at Artist and Craftsman)
White Eraser (called a stick eraser, there are two sizes, I suggest acquiring both sizes)

Mixing tray  There are many sizes and shapes.  A good one to begin with is a tray that has many troughs and can hinge close to take home.  Also the circular trays with many small circular dipping spots is nice too.

Watercolor brushes
roughly corresponding to sizes # 0, #1 and #4 The quality of these vary greatly, try a mid level cost, the cheapest will only frustrate you while painting lines and the most expensive are dear and often made of animal hair.

3.The third group of supplies is what is supplied for you at the workshop. This is is only FYI.
Your paper and paints are supplied for you at the workshop. We have the paper all ready for you.

It is precut and ready to paint on.
Paper cost is $2.50 per sheet, payable at the workshop to Kathleen. (Paints have been thankfully acquired by the Sacred Arts Foundation the previous year. If you would like additional pieces of paper, you can purchase more from Kathleen, or get a large sheet of paper while at the art store, and cut it yourself at the workhop. See art stores below.)

This is is only FYI because your paper is provided in the workshop.
140 # hot press water color paper is what Pieter recommends.  We use the pre-cut Aquarelle Arches boards, which hold 20 sheets of paper.  The easiest size to handle is 12 1/8 x 16 1/8 inches.
